EDUCATIONAL MULTIMEDIA GUIDE: WEB FORMS / ONLINE ASSESSMENT TOOL
The technology tool Formative can be used for all grades, K-12, and offers a built-in library of activities that teachers can use in the classroom or they can create their own assessments, https://goformative.com/library . There is also YouTube Formative channel with many helpful videos for using Formative https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTYCAqH67MNhKtOezThRS4w .
Formative has many features to engage students. Teachers can view student responses as they participate in the lesson or assessment. Teachers can create classes in Formative and view student progress over time which provides needed data to measure student learning. Formative is designed to offer many features that define high-level formative assessments, such as varied response choices and teachers can provide immediate feedback to students (McMillan, 2018).
Since teachers can view results immediately and provide feedback, they are able to modify and adjust instruction as needed. Teachers can determine student readiness lessons and differentiate instruction by providing different codes for different groups of students. Being able to administer unique formative assessments for each unique subgroup would provide data that would track subgroups’ learning targets mastery over time. Many times, classes have two distinct groups of students, those that are coded based on their IEPs and those that do not have IEPs. Using Formative would enable a teacher to quickly adapt an assessment for both sets of students and provide the required data for each group.
Using the results in Formative over time, would meet the ISTE Student Standards for the empowered learner (International Society for Technology in Education, 2016). The feedback provided gives students the tools so that they are active participants in their learning. No longer do students have to wait for teachers to grade and provide feedback on student work. Also, Formative allows many types of responses, so students can demonstrate their learning in many ways if the assessment is set up correctly.
Formative is browser based so there are no apps to load which makes it easy to use when a teacher wants a quick assessment. The use of basic Formative is free and then there is a premium version too for an additional cost. According to many of the teacher reviews, Formative is easy to use and provides useful data and the tool works best in situations where all students have a technology device (Common Sense Education, 2016).
